During the final weeks of December, is typically when people create their goals for the upcoming year. This is how resolutions are formed, and the exciting feeling that this year you may in fact achieve your goals once and for all.
I just watched a fascinating episode of one of my favorite TV shows, HOUSE. In this particular episode, House was teaching his residents about diagnosing. He explained “most of what can be learned about diagnosing comes from what is not there, rather that what is.” What he meant was, that in order to properly diagnosis some illnesses you have to find symptoms that are not there, rather than looking at the obvious. The true question to ask is “what is missing?” For example, if someone cuts their hand, and they are bleeding, and they are not crying, it may be because they have a problem with their tear duct, which could represent a partial paralysis from the spine. You get the picture, right?
It was a very profound statement! Many times in life coaching, my clients come to me with problems that relate directly to what is happening in their life and circumstances. A great deal of energy can be spent on going around and around on creating solutions to fix the problem. A better question to ask would be, “what is a missing element in your life, that you just can’t live without, such as joy or contentment?” This is where the real work is.
In an ideal world, you repeatedly want to ask yourself, what do I want? What do I need? What prevents? These are the questions that will get you results. A life coach can be an invaluable tool to answer these questions as well as provide you tools and strategies to put systems in place to ensure you achieve all of your resolutions this year.
You get it, right?
I got it about 5 years ago, when I discovered the law of attraction. One of the primary questions that the law of attraction teaches you to ask is “what do I want?’ By asking this simple question your subconscious mind will provide you with answers that will give you the true goals. You may think you are after a relationship, however the true goal may be fulfillment, which there are many ways to achieve.
Wow! What an eye-opener that was … and it still is!
I encourage you to ask the same. WHAT do you want and not have that consumes your energy and prevents you from achieving your goals? Your efficiency of HOW you will achieve your goals and motivation behind WHY you do those things are not nearly as important to your success as WHAT you want.
You don’t have to believe me. Just grab your journal and write down what it is that you think you want to accomplish for 2009. Then ask yourself, what is behind this? And again…what is behind this? Continue to ask yourself these questions until you know what is really behind your resolution and goal. That is how you create real success.
As for me, here are the 4 goals I’m aiming to accomplish in 2009. I will focus all of my energy and attention on these TRUE goals, and divert my energy away from anything else, as this is where the TRUE work is: (you will find the actual goal in bold, and the true goal in the parenthesis)
1. Increase Coaching Business (to be able to personally touch thousands of women’s lives and help them get exactly what it is they desire in life)
2. Appear As A Guest on Oprah (to reach the millions of women that she has in her network and provide them with the tools and knowledge to find clarity and their life purpose)
3. To Fall Madly In Love With An Incredible (for me) Life Partner (to have someone to share my life with, to love, adore, cherish, and worship, and laugh a lot with. To find someone that also wants to make a huge impact on others lives and travel the world sharing this knowledge)
4. To Have A Fit, Toned, Bikini-Ready Body (to have ultimate fitness, health and energy so that I feel great, always and have an abundance of energy to share with women all over the world)
In 2009, I’ll focus all of my energy on making the end result (the goals in parenthesis) happen. Any time I feel a lack of motivation towards achieving my goals, I will focus on the emotional reasons behind the actual goal, and what has been missing in my life up until this point.
